My First Mac
Mac Pertamaku

I needed a computer and I had some preferences, but then I chose to buy a Mac. I was a new Mac user. Before I bought my first laptop and my first Mac, this was tempting comments that I got from my friends:

  1. Mac is less vulnerable
  2. Mac is idiot-proof
  3. Mac has a long battery life
  4. Mac has a good after sales service
  5. Mac is slim and light
  6. Mac has a larger trackpad than others
  7. You can work faster with a Mac
  8. Now more people like Mac than before
  9. I saw Mac in many hollywood's box office movies
  10. Mac can run Windows

  10. Mac bisa menjalankan Windows

My choice was a MacBook Pro with 13 inch display and basic specification (Mac OS X 10.5.7 is installed). Within my first 30 minutes (more or less), these were my disappointments (I can not blame Apple because I did not find enough information before I bought it, I also could not blame myself because I could not think about these until I used my Mac):

  1. I could not detach its battery, it is built in (I need to take off the casing in order to detach the battery)
  2. The DVD ROM made terrible sound. It can even make me think slightly whether my Mac is OK or not. I searched the button to eject the DVD on near there but it was not there.
  3. There were no button to turn WiFi or trackpad on and off.
  4. The keyboard generate “click” noise.
  5. The screen and its frame is glossy. I am afraid if I accidentally put some small things on its palm-rest, those can scratch the screen when I close it.
  6. I needed to press the trackpad to click (left) instead of just touch it. No additional button to do left and right click.
  7. I could not put it on my pillow or my quilt.
  8. I must keep my mug away from my Mac.
  9. The screen became darker if I don't do anything for several second and then it became black out. I tried to tap or press the trackpad but nothing happened.
  10. In my second day, at night, I tried to shut it down but it said that some applications need to be closed. I did “force quit” to all applications and I still could not shut it down or restart it. I chose to log out and it looked that it worked. I closed it and I went sleep. In the morning I found out that it is still processing. I tried to turn it off by pressing the on/off button, but nothing happened. If I detached the power cable, it will still run using its battery. I could not detach the battery. This was terrible. Then I tried to press the on/off button for several seconds (like in windows) and It worked. I was relieved. When I rebooted it again, it worked fine.

  10. Di hari kedua saat malam, aku mencoba mematikannya tapi menurutnya beberapa aplikasi perlu ditutup dulu. Kupilih "force quit" semua aplikasi dan tetap saja aku gagal mematikan atau menghidupkannya ulang. Aku coba log out dan tampaknya berhasil. Aku tutup saja lalu tidur. Paginya ternyata masih memproses. Aku coba mematikannya dengan menekan tombol on/off, tapi tiada yang terjadi. Kalau kulepas kabel power, laptop tetap bekerja dengan tenaga baterai. Gawad sekali. Maka kucoba menekan tombol on/off beberapa detik seperti pada windows dan Berhasil. Leganya. Ketika kuhidupkan lagi, semuanya beres.

Picture 3 All Ports are on the left side and it did not come with VGA port (this can be troublesome when you need to connect it to projectors)

After I used it for several weeks:

  1. I do not need to consider whether I need to detach the battery or not before I plug its power cable (because it is too difficult). The power cable has a LED, it will emit orange light when the battery is charged otherwise it will emit green light which means that the Mac uses power from cable instead of battery.
  2. I am getting used to it. I found the button to eject the DVD in my mac keyboard.
  3. I still can not find those buttons.
  4. It is always like that.
  5. I think that Apple has consider this matter before.
  6. I found the settings to make it touchable (System Preferences → Hardware, Trackpad → Tick “Tap to Click”). I also found that I can configure the trackpad so when I press the bottom right of it, it will be identified as right click (System Preferences → Hardware, Trackpad → Tick “Secondary Click” and choose “Bottom Right Corner”), but I still need to press it instead of just tap on it.
  7. It is because pillow or quilt may block air circulation.
  8. It is because I may accidentally spill on it and the manual said that it did not have any features to support such things.
  9. I found that I just need to press something on my keyboard.
  10. I still did not know what had happened, but it certainly made me like an idiot (where was those “idiot-proof” comment came from?)

Setelah kupakai beberapa minggu:

My reflection:

Before I use a Mac, I used Windows XP. At that time many of my friends had used Windows Vista or Windows 7 (Release Candidate 1). I did not change to the newer version of Windows because I thought my current windows was enough to cover my daily needs. My computer was still fine, I had already installed all applications that I needed and I barely needed another one. I have no reason to change or upgrade, but many people did that. My friends liked to show me how good and sophisticated those newer systems were, but many of those just additional features or refinements and it was not necessary (I mean, it is good if you can have it, but it is also still ok if you did not). Now I started to think that OS and any other applications are just like fashion or consumer products. It regularly releases its new version but I get an impression that the major changes are just in their look and many people buy it because of the trend.

Refleksiku:

- ngerasain windows yg masih gratis
